Review & Giveaway: An Old Betrayal by Charles Finch

Description (from cover):

'In the seventh book of Finch's bestselling series of Victorian mysteries, a case of mistaken identity has Charles Lenox playing for his highest stakes yet: the safety of Queen Victoria herself...

On a spring morning in London, 1875, Charles Lenox agrees to take time away from his busy schedule as a Member of Parliament to meet an old protege's client at Charing Cross.  But when their cryptic encounter seems to lead, days later, to the murder of an innocuous country squire, this fast favor draws Lenox inexorably back into his old profession.

Soon he realizes that, far from concluding the murderer's business, this body is only the first step in a cruel plan, many years in the plotting. Where will he strike next? The answer, Lenox learns with slowly dawning horror, may be at the very heart of England's monarchy.

Ranging from the slums of London to the city's corridors of power, the newest Charles Lenox novel bears all of this series' customary wit, charm, and trickery--a compulsive escape to a different time.'

My thoughts:

Imagine my surprise when the publisher of this book contacted me and wanted me to read and review one of my favorite authors. Well of course I couldn't pass that up. I enjoy Charles Lenox and his wife Jane so immensely that I couldn't wait to see what the two would get into in this newest addition to an already fabulous series. This book reminds me of the books towards the beginning of the series where Lenox is purely focused on solving mysteries and dubious crimes and less focused on his political career. I loved the ending of this book and it promises a bright future for Lenox, Jane and their daughter, Sophia.

Lenox can't help but get caught in up intrigue. When his protege, Dallington asks Lenox to meet a potential client because he is sick, Lenox finds himself embroiled in political intrigue and murder. Of course Lenox cannot let it go and it nags him until he finds himself devoting all of his time to the investigation and less time to his duties in Parliament. Which makes sense of course. Who wants to listen to boring speeches when they can be on the tail of a lucrative killer who will stop at nothing to achieve his ambitions.

I really enjoyed reading this book and the escape it provided. I love the backdrop of the 1800's and the bustling city of London. This series has long been one of my favorites and the characters feel like family. I can't wait to see what all the author has in store for them and there is a nice little surprise at the end that I didn't see coming. I appreciate the author's knack for keeping this series fresh and I highly recommend this series. You can't go wrong reading a Charles Finch book!
