Review & Giveaway: Recipe for Treason by Andrea Penrose

Description (from cover):

'A diabolical traitor who's always out of reach...

England, 1814. Lady Arianna Hadley and her husband, the Earl of Saybrook, want nothing more than to savor a quiet life embellished by the occasional cup of the finest chocolate. However, when they receive orders to travel to Scotland to capture an elusive traitor, they feel their duty to the Crown must come first.

In a laboratory in Scotland, they discover a dying chemistry professor and cryptic papers hinting at a dangerous new discovery now in enemy hands. Racing against time, Arianna and Saybrook pursue their most cunning adversary yet through a complex network of intrigue involving exotic chocolates, daredevil aviators, a missing inventor, and a secret recipe that must be recovered at any cost...'

My thoughts:

I love books that hit the ground running as soon as you start them. That's the way this book was. Immediately at the beginning the action occurs and doesn't let go until the very end. Lady Arianna and her husband the Earl of Saybrook have been involved in affairs of espionage for the British government and they have been asked to participate in another task. They are asked to go to Scotland to try and discover a treasonous criminal known only by the name of Reynard. Reynard has eluded them thus far in their adventures, but Arianna and her husband are determined to catch him or her once and for all. Their investigation takes them through the dark and dreary streets of Scotland and the intrigue of the upper class society in London. Lady Arianna makes a new friend along the way and is introduced to some very intellectual types while investigating at the Royal Institution. She must use her sharp wit and aptitude of espionage to find out who is friend and who is foe.

I had a hard time keeping up with what happened previously in this series with this book. This is the third in the Lady Arianna Regency mystery series and I have read all the other books (Sweet Revenge and The Cocoa Conspiracy) and know the back story, but I found it a little confusing to remember what happened. It might just be bad memory or that it's been some time since I've read the other books, but it seemed to me to take a little from the story of this book trying to keep up with what happened previously. I highly recommend reading this series in order or you will be lost and the story does build from book to book. I really enjoy Lady Arianna's character. She is not the normal society lady of that era and her spitfire personality and independent ways seems to always get her into trouble. It's never a dull moment with her. I also enjoy her husband, the Earl of Saybrook, and we get to see them work on different aspects of the mystery separately and together, which I found nice. Earl Saybrook is a little secretive, even to his own wife, and I like that air of mysterious element he brings to the story.

The mystery itself was intriguing enough. I don't think that this one was as good as the previous books in this series, but it's still not a bad read. There seemed to be less suspects and when the mystery was revealed it was a little predictable. Personally I would have liked to seen more suspects and more clues and trying to solve the case instead of some other things, but still a nice addition to this series. Highly recommend it to lovers of historical mysteries that love intrigue and a page turning plot. I can't wait to see what's next for Lady Arianna and Earl Saybrook.
